Voice Options Program

Jonathan's Story

At 64, Jonathan’s world began to shrink in ways he never imagined. Once a vibrant, strong, and

outgoing man—known for his humor, love of entertaining, and dedication to weight training—he

gradually lost control of his motor skills and, eventually, his ability to speak due to Parkinson’s

disease. For a man whose personality had always filled the room, the silence was especially devastating.

By the time Jonathan was referred to Family Support Network’s Voice Options Program,

communication had been reduced to the smallest of gestures—a faint lift of his fingers to greet

others, and subtle eye movements to answer yes-or-no questions. Though his body had changed,

it was clear that Jonathan was still present, still aware, and still eager to connect. His wife, who had witnessed the progression of his disease firsthand, held onto memories of the man he had always been—strong, funny, deeply social—and hoped there was still a way for that part of him to re-emerge. Through the Voice Options Program, Jonathan received a speech-generating device equipped with both a keyboard and a stylus to help him communicate more precisely. What happened next was immediate and unforgettable.

On the very first day, while his wife was busy signing paperwork, Jonathan reintroduced himself

in the most “Jonathan” way possible. He selected a “Bad Guy” voice on the device—an

unexpected and playful choice that instantly reflected his sense of humor—and then typed out his

first message:

“Hey, wasn’t there a keyboard that was supposed to come with this?”

He was absolutely right. The keyboard hadn’t yet been unpacked. In that moment, the room shifted. What had begun as a clinical process transformed into something deeply human. Jonathan wasn’t just using a device—he was reclaiming his voice, his wit, and his identity.

Soon after, he expressed his desire to call his three grown sons. Communication was no longer a barrier; it was becoming a bridge back to the relationships that mattered most. His wife, seeing this spark of personality return, grew emotional. “This is the Jonathan I know,” she said, her hope renewed.

Jonathan’s journey is a powerful reminder that even when disease takes so much, the essence of

a person remains. With the right tools and support, that essence can find its way back into the

world—sometimes with humor, sometimes with determination, but always with meaning.
